Cantor Sandra Sherry has served as cantor of Temple Beth El since 1989. A graduate of Hebrew Union College, Cantor Sherry's passion for combining music and spirituality is evident throughout Temple Beth El. Cantor Sherry oversees and leads prayer at Shabbat and holiday services, conducts both the Temple Beth El adult and childrens' choirs, mentors and tutors students becoming bar and bat mitzvah, and is actively involved in all musical endeavors and activities (and there are a lot) at Temple Beth El. Every day is spent singing and teaching both children and adults, and sharing in the life cycle events of the Beth El congregation.
For the past ten years, Cantor Sherry has been an instrumental contributor to Temple Beth El's famed Chutzpah Repertory Company productions as originator, performer, teacher and director. Cantor Sherry sings with with the Long Island Cantor's Ensemble and has performed with the Gilbert and Sullivan Light Opera Company in Phoenix Arizona, the American Mood machine, and summer musical theater.
Cantor Sherry's career began as a teacher in Arizona, on a Navajo Indian Reservation. Later, as a congregant at Temple Beth El of Great Neck, NY, Cantor Sherry joined the choir and so distinguished herself that they made her their music teacher, Soon after, at the urging of Cantor Barbara Horowitz (the first female graduate from Hebrew Union College), Cantor Sherry enrolled in the Cantorial program as well as the Aaron Copeland School of Music, and following her graduation, became the Cantor at Temple Beth El of Huntington.
To paraphrase Rabbi Sheldon Zimmerman,"To be a Jewish leader one must love the Jewish people." Cantor Sherry shares that love with her congregation. It is clear to all who have heard her sing, who have studied with her, who have prayed with her, that Cantor Sherry loves Judaism and her congregation. We are most fortunate that she has chosen Temple Beth El as her home.
