Why join HHS?

The Community Hebrew High School provides an opportunity for Jewish teens to continue their Jewish education in an academic and social environment. Our school, which is supported and endorsed by Temple Beth David of Commack, Temple Beth El of Huntington, and Temple Chaverim of Plainview, gathers over 175 teenagers in grades 8 through 12, for an evening of Jewish learning and socialization. CHHS meets on Monday evenings from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. CHHS rotates to each of the participating temples for eight weeks at a time.

GRADES 8 AND 9: CONFIRMATION PREP

This year our eighth and ninth graders will have the unique opportunity to choose the subjects that they will study for the entire school year. Students will be studying electives of their choice. Each trimester students will be able to choose from a different group of course offerings. These choices will be mailed home in the beginning of October so that parents will have the opportunity to review the course choices with their children. There is a varied selection of elective topics for the students to choose from, such as teen issues, current events in Israel, or comparing Hebrew prayers to lyrics in modern day music.

GRADE 10: CONFIRMATION

This year our tenth graders will have the opportunity to choose the subjects that they will study for the first trimester of the school
year. Students will be studying electives of their choice with students in other grades. For the remaining two trimesters of the school year, our 10th graders have the opportunity to study with the senior rabbis from our three congregations. Each week, students will discuss and debate topics ranging from Israel and the Middle East to abortion, euthanasia, or intermarriage.  Their year of study culminates in our Confirmation ceremony on May 21, 2011 at Temple Chaverim. In order to be eligible for Confirmation, attendance is required at the Conclave November 18th - 20th as well as the majority of classes throughout the year.

GRADES 11 AND 12: MADRICHIM PROGRAM

Our eleventh and twelfth graders will also have the opportunity to choose from electives. One elective each trimester will include leadership and/or teacher training skills. The elective choices will be mailed home in the beginning of October so that parents will have
the opportunity to review the course choices with their children.
