Repairing The WorldTikkun Olam (Repairing The World)  Temple Beth El is committed to our community and offers many opportunities for you to participate in the mitzvot of "Repairing The World".  If you are interested in getting involved with one of our many projects listed below, please contact Carol Werblin at: cwerblin@hotmail.com

Temple Beth El Social Action Opportunities

High Holy Day food drive - Our congregants donated more than 200 bags of groceries for the needy. In addition to stocking our own pantry to feed those in need, we donated 350 lbs. of food to the Long Island Cares and an additional 350 pounds to the Tri CYA, a local youth agency.

Huntington Interfaith Homeless Initiative (HIHI) - For the eighth consecutive year, Temple Beth El will be a respite siste on Wednesday nights for the Huntington Interfaith Homeless Initiative (HIHI). We will be providing a warm place to stay for those who would othrwise be sleeping outside during the coldest winter nights.

HIHI Supply Drive - Please ensure the success of HIHI by donating some much needed items (Supply List).

Community Thanksgiving Feast - TBE’s annual holiday feast and celebration for our community will take place on Sunday, November 20th, from 2:00 - 4:00 PM. Watch for notices in the bulletin to volunteer to help in the kitchen, serve, drive, bake, clean up and work in the clothing ‘boutique.’

Cell phone and ink-cartridge collection is under way. To encourage recycling and “greening,” a box for unwanted cell phones has been placed in the Main Office. Phones will be donated – most likely to a woman’s shelter - where they will be reactivated and reused. Sisterhood and the Temple are also collecting used computer ink cartridges for recycling.

New Social Action projects

Nothing But Nets - We are participating with the Union for Reform Judaism in this worldwide initiative. The URJ has committed to supplying 50,000 bed nets for sub-Saharan African communities to protect families from mosquitoes transmitting malaria. A $10 contribution goes directly towards the purchase, distribution, and monitoring of an insecticide-treated bed net. More information and/or to contribute, follow this link.

Give and Recieve - Are you moving? Downsizing? Donate your items to Give and Receive to be distributed to our needier neihbors in the local community. We especially need twin beds, dressers, pots and pans, and small appiances.

How Can I Make A Contribution?

The attached form can be filled out and sent in to Temple Beth El.  You can select which fund you would like to make a contribution to.  No donation is too small.

Community-Supported Agriculture
Temple Beth El chosen as a Pick-Up Site for Golden Earthworm CSA !

The Golden Earthworm is a certified orgainic CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) farm on the East End of Long Island. They serve over 1500 member families across Long Island and Queens. In return for an annual membership fee to cover the production costs of the farm, CSA members receive a weekly share of the highest quality organically-grown harvest during the local growing season. When members obtain food from local farmers, they are directly supporting small, family farms in their community as well as receiving the freshest available produce.

A number of our congregants have joined the Golden Earthworm CSA for the 2011 season and have already received shares. We even have enough members who have joined that we are able to donate a free share each week to a local soup kitchen!

CSA members, remember that YOU MUST PICK UP YOUR SHARE NO LATER THAN 8:00 PM ON WEDNESDAY NIGHT. After 8:00 PM all remaining  fruits and vegetables will be donated to a soup kitchen. There is a list of all participants so that you can arrange for someone else to pick up your share if necessary.

Please contact Florence Roffman at florence.roffman@gmail.com or at 631-754-6255 if you have questions.

In the News

"The Reform community has a long history of generosity when natural disasters devastate communities, when houses of worship burn in the fires of racial prejudice, when terrorism causes havoc, and when other disasters cause harm across the planet. Recent relief efforts have included Haiti Relief, Israel Emergency Relief, Hurricanes, the Asian Tsunami and Sudan"..... click here to read full story.
