Cinema and the Cities with Film Historian and Lecturer Max Alvarez

Join Max Alvarez for this perfect summer “staycation” on how the movies portray the world’s greatest cities. Zoom attendees will experience fake Hollywood recreations (An American in Paris, My Fair Lady), romantic settings (You’ve Got Mail, Bridget Jones’ Diary), and gritty realism (The French Connection, 28 Days Later). No updated passports or airport security clearances are required!

Sunday, August 16th: When In Rome

After World War II, the world’s moviegoers fell in love with Rome as seen by Hollywood in Roman Holiday and Three Coins in the Fountain. Meanwhile, great Italian filmmakers captured the haunting city through their artistic camera lenses (De Sica’s The Bicycle Thief, Fellini’s La Dolce Vita).

Sunday, August 23rd: Stopover: Las Vegas

America’s gambling capital has been the setting for pure escapism (the original Ocean’s Eleven), stylized romance (One From the Heart), retro comedy (Swingers), and even James Bond (Diamonds Are Forever) and Martin Scorsese (Casino). Bet all your chips on this session because the payoff will be huge!
